Hamamatsu and Portugese

When I frist came to Hamamatsu, I was so suprised when saw the City Center Guide map and the road signs. Expect from japanese and English, an unknown language was also on there. This is which country's text? Why Hamamatsu will use this? I was totally perplexed. The epistle from the city also can see this text. I was forgot about this soon becasue too busy on my settle down,.
On February, there was a friend of Portugese national from Australia to Hamamatsu for travel. He becames very exciting when saw the road signs. And ask me : Why would they used Portuguese text on it? I was speechless and cannot answer. Afterwards, he read the Portugueses text to me whenever he saw.
The next day, he told me the infromation which search from internet. Brazil is the country which had the most largest numbers of Japanese living in. A hundred year after 1908, there were 130,000 Japanese moved to Brazil. But in the end of twentieth century, there are many Japaneses and Brazilian Japaneses had chosen to return to Japan for permanent residents. Manys of them are living in Hamamatsu So the road signs and government documents needed to use Portuguese .
I feel a bit ashamed for myself. I have been living in Hamamatsu but didn't know the things around me. He is just a vistor, becasue of the love of his own country. He had those passion to check on the internet and find out the reason. As a parts of Hamamatsu, I want to discovery everything about Hamamatsu from now on.

Japanese Sweets

I've tried several kinds of Japanese sweets since coming to Japan. Japanese sweets are called "Wagashi." My favorite is "Yuuko" of Kyoto. "Yuuko" is a well-known sweet associated with the lyricism of the main character, Katagiri Yuuko, in the novel "Gobanchou Yuugirirou" (The House of Evening Mist on Fifth Avenue)
Whereas other Japanese sweets have that all-important eye appeal,"Yuuko" does not. It almost looks like a steamed dumpling. Its skin is made from rice, and its filling is sweet red adzuki bean paste. It doesn't have extraordinary looks, but it does provide a wonderfully happy feeling when eaten with Japanese tea.
Usually one drinks matcha in the vicinity of Japan's famous temples. I think that the sweets enjoyed with matcha are darling. There are even pink and light blue sweets. However, compared to "Yuuko", the beauty of these sweets doesn't leave as deep an impression in the heart. "Yuuko" is one of the most delightful Japanese sweets.

Recommended attractions in Hamamatsu

The first place I visited when I came to Japan was Hamamatsu. I have a lot of good memories there. I like Hamamatsu very much. It is a city I would like you to visit at least once when you come to Japan. There are many interesting places here.
First of all, what makes Hamamatsu interesting is that it faces the ocean and has lakes. You can go to the ocean as well as the lakes when you come to Hamamatsu. The famous lake in Hamamatsu is Lake Hamana. The view of the lake is pretty and tranquil, and this is my favorite place as it makes me feel peaceful.Whenever I feel sad or something is troubling me, I go to the lake and I feel at peace. We are born in this era where we are forced to rush in a busy society and have little time to rest. When I was in Thailand, a teacher who taught Japanese at my university told me like this. "Look at the Kanji character for busy. This Kanji character is a combination of mind and dead, which suggests that being busy means your mind is dead," the teacher said. At that time, I thought, "That is right." When you are busy, you only work and it feels like your mind is dead. I was able to take a rest at Lake Hamana and my lost mind and heart were reborn. It made me feel really good when that happened and I would like to introduce that to you.
Speaking of Hamamatsu, everyone knows about its local specialty Unagi Pie. Therefore, the next place I recommend visiting is the Unagi Pie factory. When I first heard of Unagi Pie, I pictured the image of a pie with unagi (eel) inside. I thought, "It is a bit of a strange pie."But when I went to see the Unagi Pie factory, it was totally different from what I had expected. The pies looked very good. And they are delicious. When I go to Hamamatsu I definitely buy this pie as a souvenir. Not only you can eat these tasty pies but also you can learn about the history of the pies and the way they are made. Here, you can become an expert on Unagi Pie.
There are more interesting places to visit besides these two I just mentioned. Please come and visit Hamamatsu. Then, you will be able to find what makes Hamamatsu attractive.

My Japanese "okaasan" (mother)

I was born in 1987. From then until 2005, I always lived with my mother. For about 17 years my mother and I always went places and did things together, so even now I never forget my mother wherever I go.
In 2005, I moved to a different island, so until now I've been separated from my mother. Living alone, I had a lot of new experiences. There were good experiences and bad ones. Sometimes it was easy, but when I was sick it was so painful I couldn't stand it, and of course I couldn't help thinking it would be nice to be by my mother's side.
Now I live in Japan. I'm even farther away. Even if I'm lonely, I have to put up with it because it's for the sake of my future. My friends in Indonesia said "Japanese people are cold," but I think that depends on the person and I'm not worried about it anymore.
Now I've already been living in Japan for about a year. Problems come not only from linguistic differences, but also from cultural ones. For the first six months, even though I was living in Japan I kept following the customs of my own country, so I couldn't get used to Japanese culture.
I couldn't get used to it and stress was building up, but after I found my current part-time job, that problem went away. I had changed jobs several times and hadn't been able to make close friends. But the good thing is that the lady at my current job is a really wonderful "okaasan" (mother). Her hobbies and the way she talks remind me of my real mom. Before, I spoke with my mother every day on the phone, but since I met this "okaasan" at my job, things have changed. Recently I'm fine even if I don't talk to my mother every day. When I see my "okaasan," I feel at ease because it's like seeing my own mother.

Ibu Jepang

The Culture of Reading While Standing

Japan's convenience stores have a variety of magazines. Magazines about fashion or manga are lined up very neatly.
If you go to a convenience store, there will always be someone standing there reading them. No one in South Korea stands and reads in convenience stores. I thought about whether reading while standing is a good thing or a bad thing. I've heard that there are many magazines and manga in Japan, and competition between them is fierce. Since reading while standing causes magazines to be dirtied and racks to have to be reorganized, it can't be good for convenience store managers. But since people who stand and read will buy other things, reading while standing might create a good opportunity to bring customers into the convenience store. Also, since reading while standing increases the chance that the reader will be interested and buy the magazine, I don't think it's a bad thing for publishers.
I often stand and read in convenience stores, buying magazines I like as well as other products. I felt that the culture of reading while standing is accepted by Japanese society and economy.
